The importance of having a Pinterest business account

Ready to unlock the power of Pinterest for your business? Below, I’ll walk you through how to set up a Pinterest business account in just three easy steps. If you already have a personal Pinterest account, you can choose to convert it to a business account or start fresh with a new one. The best part? It’s totally free and packed with valuable insights and extra features. Setting it up is a breeze! Here’s why and how.

Why you should set up a Pinterest business account

A business account gives you…

  • Pinterest Ads – Advertise in a place where ads don’t actually feel like ads. Unlike ads on most other platforms they blend in naturally with relevant content and are shown in context to an interested audience. This is what makes advertising on Pinterest unique and very effective.
  • Pinterest Trends Tool a powerful keyword tool that shows you what’s trending and when. It reveals what people are searching for on Pinterest and the peak times for those searches.
  • Pinterest Analytics – a mine of valuable business information providing you with insights about your Pinterest audience, your best performing content and how it drives traffic to your website.
  • Audience Insights – they give you a peek into what your current and potential customers are interested in based on their Pinterest activity. These insights are powered by the actions people take on Pinterest, such as their searches and saves.
  • Creator Hub (on Pinterest app) – here you can view the overall performance of your latest creations and seek inspiration for your next content.

Here’s how to create a Pinterest business account in 3 easy steps

Step 1 – Create or convert an account

Do you already have an account, but are unsure if it is a business account? Here’s how you can check:

  • Log into your account and click the down arrow at the top-right corner
  • Click Settings and select Account Management (left menu)
  • Check if you have the option to convert to a business account (see image below). If so, you currently have a personal account which you’ll need to convert to a business account. Converting to a business account will not affect your pins, boards, and followers in any way, but will give you access to valuable data for your business.

Create a new account, then follow the steps to set up your Pinterest business account

If you’re setting up an account from scratch, go to pinterest.com/business/create/ and create a new account. Go through the sequence of windows that guide you through the account set up process. It’s quick and easy to follow:

  • Describe your business | Pick the best description of your business from the list
  • Tell us about your business | Provide your business name, location and website. The name you provide will appear as a title at the top of your page. It can be modified at any time.
  • A few more details | Select the relevant business goals, brand focus and ad interest to help Pinterest optimise the account based on your information.
  • Where would you like to start? | Click on Showcase your brand. When you’re starting from scratch, before doing anything else, you should build your profile (i.e. account).

Select “Showcase your brand”

Step 2 – Build your profile

After opting to Showcase your brand, you will be taken to the Settings section (also accessible via the down arrow at the top-right corner of your page). The information you enter here is public and will be visible to anyone visiting your page. Follow the guidelines below when setting up your Pinterest profile.

  • PHOTO | Add your logo or personal picture here. To display a professional image of your business, any photo portraits should be taken by a professional photographer. The recommended picture size is 165 x 165 pixels.
  • NAME | This is the page title that will appear in bold just below your photo or logo. You can use up to 65 characters. Enter your business name here and, if possible, include any keywords to increase Pinterest SEO. Align the information in this field with the search terms people may use to find you.
  • ABOUT | This is the description that appears at the top of your Pinterest page, just below the title. You have up to 500 characters at your disposal to describe your business and entice people to follow you on Pinterest. Again, use keywords in your description for SEO optimisation. Put the information that you want people to read at the beginning, because the text gets cut off after 2 or 3 lines.
  • PRONOUNS | If you wish to add pronouns, you can pick up to 2 from the list.
  • WEBSITE | This is pre-filled if you entered your website during the account creation. If not, enter your website URL here.
  • USERNAME | Think carefully what you will put here. This is the name that will appear in your Pinterest URL. You could just add your company name here. However, it may be worth including a keyword that describes your business. When doing a search on Pinterest or any other search engine, most people will search for a keyword rather than a business name. For example, if you are a garden designer named John Smith, then you may want to consider JS_Garden_Design rather than JohnSmith as user name. Note that you are limited to 30 characters and many names are already taken, but it is worth giving this some creative thought.

The information listed above is the key information that should appear on your public Pinterest page. You’ll have to decide if it makes sense for your business to include an email address, postal address and telephone number. When you’re done, click on Save and move on to the next step.

Step 3 – Claim your website

Claiming your website on Pinterest is super important! It ensures your profile picture shows up next to any Pins you publish. When people tap or click on your profile image, they’ll be taken straight to your Pinterest page where they can follow you.

Plus, once your website is claimed, you’ll get valuable insights into how often your content is shared on Pinterest, thanks to Pinterest Analytics tracking interactions. If you have a Shopify store, you can install an app to connect your store to Pinterest and showcase your products directly on the platform.
